Light of Islam

"Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest."

— Surah Ar-Ra'd  ·  13:28

The Five Kalimahs

The five sacred declarations that form the spiritual pillars of a Muslim's faith and daily remembrance.

1
First Kalimah — Tayyibah  (The Pure Word)
Laa ilaaha illallaahu Muhammadur-Rasoolullah
Meaning: There is none worthy of worship except Allah; Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.
2
Second Kalimah — Shahadat  (The Testimony)
Ash-hadu al-laa ilaaha illallaahu wahdahu laa shareeka lahu wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa Rasooluh
Meaning: I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, alone without partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.
3
Third Kalimah — Tamjeed  (The Glorification)
Subhaanallaahi walhamdu lillaahi wa laa ilaaha illallaahu wallaahu akbar. Wa laa hawla wa laa quwwata illaa billaahil-'aliyyil-'azeem
Meaning: Glory be to Allah, and all praise is for Allah, and there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and Allah is the Greatest. And there is no power and no strength except with Allah, the Most High, the Most Great.
4
Fourth Kalimah — Tawheed  (Oneness of Allah)
Laa ilaaha illallaahu wahdahu laa shareeka lahu lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu yuhyee wa yumeetu wa huwa hayyun laa yamootu abadaa. Dhul-jalaali wal-ikraam. Biyadihil-khayr. Wa huwa 'alaa kulli shay'in qadeer
Meaning: There is none worthy of worship except Allah, alone without partner. To Him belongs all sovereignty and all praise. He gives life and causes death, and He is Ever-Living, never dying. Possessor of Majesty and Honor. In His hand is all goodness, and He has power over all things.
5
Fifth Kalimah — Astaghfar  (Seeking Forgiveness)
Astaghfirullaaha rabbi min kulli dhambin adhnabtuhu 'amadan aw khata'an sirran aw 'alaaniyyatan wa atoobu ilayhi min adh-dhambi alladhee a'lamu wa min adh-dhambi alladhee laa a'lamu. Innaka anta 'allaamul-ghuyoobi wa sattaaril-'uyoobi wa ghaffaarudh-dhunoob. Wa laa hawla wa laa quwwata illaa billaahil-'aliyyil-'azeem
Meaning: I seek forgiveness from Allah, my Lord, for every sin I committed knowingly or unknowingly, secretly or openly. I turn to Him in repentance from every sin I know and every sin I do not know. Surely You are the Knower of the hidden, the Concealer of faults, and the Forgiver of sins. And there is no power and no strength except with Allah, the Most High, the Most Great.

Allaahu laa ilaaha illaa Huwal-Hayyul-Qayyoom. Laa ta'khudhuhu sinatun wa laa nawm. Lahoo maa fis-samaawaati wa maa fil-ard. Man-dhal-ladhee yashfa'u 'indahoo illaa bi-idhnih. Wasi'a kursiyyuhus-samaawaati wal-ard. Wa laa ya'ooduhoo hifzuhumaa. Wa Huwal-'Aliyyul-'Azeem.
Translation Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.
